Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry combines health and function with artistic design to create a result that is tailored to each individual. While many people think "cosmetic dentistry" refers to simply making teeth look nice, it actually encompasses techniques that are used for engineering sound, functional and natural-looking teeth at the back of the mouth as well as the front. Choosing to enhance your smile can promote healthier teeth and gums and prevent further tooth damage and decay. Beauty and function should go hand in hand. The best cosmetic dentistry should not be noticed as dentistry at all, but simply as a great smile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cosmetic & Aesthetic Dentistry

Don't all dentists do cosmetic dentistry?
To achieve fine results with cosmetic dentistry, a dentist requires extensive additional training and often years of experience. The ability to combine art, science and technical skill is necessary to create a functional and beautiful result. When choosing a dentist, determine the special training they have undertaken in the area of cosmetic dentistry and how much of their practice is devoted to the field.. (See our "10 questions you MUST ask your dentist before you start"). Ask to see before and after photos of the work they have performed - you can judge the results for yourself!

What are mercury or silver fillings and are they harmful?
Traditional amalgam or silver fillings are composed largely of mercury and even today are still the most commonly used filling. Although they are relatively cheap and easy to "place", at the Fine Art of Dentistry, we chose to stop using them years ago. While numerous studies have shown them safe to use and the Canadian and American Dental Associations approve them, once the material has been removed from the mouth, it is considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of appropriately. Because the metal expands and contracts at a different rate than tooth structure, mercury or silver fillings also cause teeth to fracture..

Who is a good candidate for "instant orthodontics"?
Patients that decide to do instant orthodontics usually have already explored the possibility of conventional orthodontics. If you do not want to spend two to three years in braces to align your teeth, you may be able to "instantly" correct the alignment, shape and color with a simpler alternative like porcelain veneers. Sometimes a combination of treatment such as several months of “Invisalign” orthodontics (see our section on “Invisalign”) and porcelain restorations gives the best result.

How long will cosmetic dental treatments last?
They should last for years. At the Fine Art of Dentistry, we use only the most durable and long-lasting materials to ensure long term dental health. Your personal oral hygiene, habits, home care and frequency of dental checkups have an effect on the duration of all dental services. Good home care and regular check-ups will allow us to help you maintain your cosmetic dental work for many years.
